pltw logoMiddle school students in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Design and Modeling class started the year off with and instant design challenge. The task was design a foot orthosis for a child with cerebral palsy. Students were given no information on what a typical foot orthosis looks like and were simply given the problem and constraints. The problem was tight muscles in the back of the leg causing the child to walk on their toes and the constraints were that the orthosis must allow the foot to flex upward, but not allow it to point downward. Students are currently working on their sketching for future design challenges. Students are using isometric paper to draw 3-D shapes and view their top, front, and right views.
